The Guy on the Couch

Posted in family, people! on October 17, 2010 by marksun

Number one son has been “da guy on the couch” for the past couple of weeks while staying on Oahu, initially to take a substitute teaching certification, and having passed that,  to enjoy the rewarding social life available in Honolulu to one of his enviable though temporary status.  Although for him on Oahu there’s no car, not much money, and the need to spend some time with the parents, it’s a good time and one of expanding vocabulary.  To illustrate the “guy on the couch concept”, he told a story about a friend who was the guy on his couch a couple of years ago.  The place was in Kaimuki, famous for it’s suffocating heat at night, so sleeping outside, in the lanai, on the couch was pretty normal thing on any given night.  The friend was temporarily homeless, and we all understand, that’s very different from being Homeless.  Anyway, The gotc was shaken from sleep by the earthquake  (2008?). Earthquakes are unusual here so it is somewhat understandable that when the ground started to move, survival instinct caused him to leap to his feet  and dart into the lawn,  only to be confronted by a large, local,  prone-to-anger-management-issues and equally confused  neighbor across the back fence who, seeing the a guy in his underwear running around, immediately tagged him as the cause of the earthquake so started yelling,  “what you did?!!!  who the fuck are you” with sufficient aggression and hostility to prompt the guy on the couch to bolt from the yard and run screaming down the street in dazed terror and confusion.  This  illustrates one of the possible scenarios experienced by guys on the couches.

I suppose there are instances where the guy on the couch has to got to give up the couch to it’s original purpose of making the home of its owner more comfortable, marking the transition from staying with friends to being Homeless.  That’s the darker side and we leave it at that.

Primary Election 2010

I’m happy about Neil Abercrombie winning.  Of the  politicians running for Governer, Neil comes closest to what I believe in.   While I understand the pragmatism of the money first doctrine that is so prevalent, I sometimes sense that this comes of the callousness in society that is developing.  People like what appear to be hardcore business first approaches, but these days  that can also provide the cover for predators, like those jerks that  infiltrated the Bush presidency.  Peter Carlisle in his first interview immediately says that it is all about the money the money the money.  Duke Aiona wants to know how is opponent Neil will “balance”, whatever that means,  the budget.  I hear a lot of Money first.  Power first.  Mission first.  Aggressive attack on a problem! This is the way of war.  This is the wrong approach.  I want people to be first.  People first.  People first!  I think, I hope that Neil puts people first.

The Angry Boatsman – a tale of Enraged Neurons

It is surreal to hear at work the news about a guyI know, now under indictment, arrested by the police and released on $40,000 bail for terroristic threatening.  There is video of a boat wildly charging at high speed a boatload  of  Japanese tourists on a para-sailing adventure.   I would say though that he could have rammed them easily if murder was his intent, so terristic threatening fits. He paused to  hurl verbal abuse at this terrified audience before  tearing up Rock Piles surf break outside the Ala Wai harbor, then continuing his berserk assault on a rubber dingy in the Ala Wai, finally colliding with a boat moored at the Chevron dock.    Ted K had had a number of episodes of erratic behavior and anger over the years I’ve known him.  An apparently worsening trend continues  into his middle age. It is fortunate no one was seriously hurt, and very sad to witness this fall from grace.  At the same time I have to admit I find this bizarre episode is morbidly fascinating.  We all have our share of enraged neurons in our own brains, but held in check by something that snapped in Ted.

weather warnings, but we know it’s raining

Lee Cataluna had a typically good piece about how fear brings out the grandstanders and self promoters.  The public wants to know about potential danger, and bad news is a marketing opportunity.  As a former newscaster, she could not help but notice the familiar TV media news team mobilization in anticipation of a long awaited really good November storm only to have but the biggest stories being a roof being blown off and or high water in Hanalei.   Now we have  “furlough Friday,” swine flu vaccine,  petty workplace politics;  bosses badgering staff to produce product of little worth but opportunistic self-promotion and everybody knows what’s going on.  How much of the gross national product goes into that kind of garbage?  It’s human nature.  Another opportunity to learn and understand compassion, and leave judgement to others.
