7/13/16  Installed water filter today.  Took about an hour and several tries to get the fit right.  Flipped the filter over to the correct way with the input/output flow tubes at the bottom rather than the top.  Lubed the o-ring prior to installation. Also used the seal on the filter gasket supplied with the filter.  The cover was screwed on 180º too tight and this time I determined that much tightening was 175º too much.  Pretty sure now that amount of over-torque was unnecessary if not a bad practice. Note also the use of Dow Corning o-ring lubricant and seal.  Oh yeah – cleaned up the area a bit. Much better.

Our water filter was the original Amway full size from Alvin many years back now.  The filter is a 0.5 micron filter for  lead, chlorine and trihalomethanes – probably carbon block type.  This class of filter is described elsewhere :

  • Reduces fine sediment, chlorine taste and odor, and protozoan cysts in residential and commercial drinking water
  • Nominal filtration rating of 0.5 micron

Installation notes.

The bottom cover screws in and has always been over-tightened. This time: tightened to full tight, then torque to about 1/2″ to 1″ over torque using the crowbar for leverage and tapped with hammer.  I put markings on the cover as a guide.  The water/pressure seal is obtained by the o-ring and the sealant is a critical part of this design. Water should not be able to push past the o-ring.  The purpose of the threads is to seat the o-ring seal. It may serve a compression purpose, but seems like a super torqued threading should not be necessary.  In case compression is required, for leverage,  I used a 15″ crowbar and tapped with hammer to remove and to then re-torque the cover.  The crowbar work well.

  1. Lubricate the o-ring by coating the o-ring generously with the  DC Molycote 111 sealant and also in the o-ring seal area on the tank.
  2. lubricate the seal washer on the bottom of the filter cylinder threads and tightly screw in the filter to the bottom cover assembly.
